Formal Linguistics Group

The Formal Linguistics Group (FLG) studies the syntactic and semantic structure of natural languages using corpus-based, computational, experimental, and formal methods.

Members of the Group have contributed to key linguistic resources for Polish — including the National Corpus of Polish (NKJP), the Walenty valence dictionary (developed together with the Linguistic Engineering Group), and the UD-LFG corpus within the Universal Dependencies initiative — and pursue computational analysis grounded in Lexical Functional Grammar and Glue Semantics.

Theoretical work focuses on coordination (across LFG, HPSG, the Minimalist Program, and dependency approaches, with semantic analyses based on polyadic quantification and event semantics), on quantification, vagueness, homogeneity, and oddness, on the argument–adjunct dichotomy, and on the multifunctional Polish word to. FLG collaborates internationally with researchers at the University of Oxford, the University of Konstanz, and MIT, and takes part in numerous national and international projects.
