Project summary

The Language Data Space (LDS) is one of the Common European Data Spaces developed as part of the EU Data Strategy. It is meant to enable stakeholders such as publishers, language technology companies and press organisations to share, exchange and monetise language data and language resources, including language models, through a single platform, increasing the availability of clean, high-quality and compliant language data for language technology and AI-based services.

The European Commission contracted a consortium of four partners to create and implement the LDS; the service contract started on 19 January 2023. The work covers the identification of public and private datasets and data streams useful for building large language models and language technology applications, the establishment of a governance scheme for access to and processing of language data, and the design, implementation and deployment of the technical infrastructure of the data space.

On 29 May 2025, the European Language Data Space and the Institute of Computer Science, Polish Academy of Sciences co-organised the LDS country workshop for Poland in Warsaw, bringing together experts from Polish industry, public administration and research to discuss the importance of language data for the development of language technologies and AI-based tools in Poland. The workshop was opened and summarised by Maciej Ogrodniczuk.
